Corton-Charlemagne is not even the home turf of Coche-Dury, yet if one can find it, a Charlie from the estate could well match – if not surpass – its legendary Meursault Perrieres. These are Coche-Dury’s two top wines, and frequently the top wines in the appellations as a whole. Domaine Coche-Dury is a rather different kettle of fish. Based in decidedly workmanlike cellars below the most ordinary of suburban houses, it is run today by young Raphaël, who took over the helm from his father Jean-François five years ago.
While my tasting at the domaine was postponed by France's second COVID-19 lockdown, I sacrificed a bottle from my cellar to take a first look at Raphaël Coche's 2018 Meursault Village. The wine is very promising indeed, unwinding  in the glass with aromas of struck match, crisp orchard fruit and citrus oil, complemented by subtle hints of praline and sesame. Medium to full-bodied, with impressive cut and tension in this often rather open-knit vintage, it's elegantly textural and nicely concentrated, with tangy acids and a youthfully chalky finish.

The vines are pruned fairly heavily, and he only use “green harvest” very rarely. They use no form of pesticides in wine production at Coche Dury, fields plowed and cultivated very carefully to maintain the ecological balance. I drink a fair amount of Coche Meursault, but more often single bottles versus a vertical. Overall this was a great group, and they showed well individually and even better as a whole. And the 17 was even better and is drinking perfectly.
NB. This criterion is measured at wine level, as is the brand category rating. The 2017 Auxey-Duresses is a terrific bottle in the making, unwinding in the glass with a deep bouquet of dark wild berries, woodsmoke, incense and rich soil tones. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, ample and nicely concentrated, with a fleshy core of fruit, powdery tannins and succulent acids. This vintage has not only stood the test of time but has also grown in acclaim, making it a sought-after bottle for collectors and connoisseurs alike.
Meursault Les Rougeots exudes intense aromas of honey, toast, and hazelnut. The palate is rich, rounded, and extremely precise. This wine should be aged for 10 years before drinking. Aromas of sweet red cherries, raspberries and spices introduce the 2022 Meursault Rouge, a medium-bodied, satiny and lively red with a pretty core of fruit and good persistence on the finish.

This one comes from Les Chaumes, the vines rented from the commune of Meursault. It offers a pale fresh colour, really tight, even a little bit of sandalwood, quite juicy yet with tension, and not too much reduction. Gunflint, popcorn, yellow stone fruit, and crisp minerals. Regal and balanced, definitely exceeding the expectation of the 2018 vintage. The original Coche-Dury plot was rented from either 1985 or 1986. But the Coche Meursault Chevalieres 1992 – my first Coche – was brilliant, taking Meursault to previously unseen levels for the then-relatively-inexperienced Winehog.

It was a cold, drawn-out  winter, some two degrees cooler than the average, though rainfall and sunshine were normal. There was one severe attack of frost on December 22nd, just before Christmas, which caused widespread damage on the upside of the main road from Beaune to Dijon. Compared with 2009, these figures represent a deficit of 25 percent in red and 16 percent in white.
