Firbank Grammar School

Firbank Grammar School

In 1905, the Headmaster and founder purchased Rosstrevor, a large estate south of Allee St and its surrounding swampland. This land is now known as the Crowther Oval, sitting at the centre of the school. The oval was constructed by the help of “Old Boy engineers” who called upon “4000 loads of filling” to produce the oval.
Congratulations to these students who were awarded Summer Sports Colours at yesterday’s assembly. This is particularly true for young boys in school who are looking for guidance and mentorship to help achieve their personal and academic growth, so they become the best versions of themselves. Congratulations to Leo Grollo who took out first place for the second consecutive year in the Division 2 Slopestyle at the Victorian Interschools Snowsport championships with a dominant 20 point lead. Leo is also through to Nationals with BGS Teams for Moguls and Ski Cross. Thanks to Mark George for his event organisation and acknowledge Darran Goodger’s enduring dedication to athletics.

Congratulations also to Brayden Hope for his appointment as Vice Captain of the School in 2023. I will share more of the year’s highlights in my final edition of On the Gate next week. As previously communicated, we  would appreciate your feedback on the direction of BGS by completing a short parent survey if you haven’t already done so. The end of the school year is a time for reflection and celebration, both of which took place at our Junior School Presentation Night and Secondary School Presentation Evening. Haileybury Senior School Tianjin and is located just outside of Beijing, China.
This year we are also holding a separate Christmas party for ELC families on Monday 27 November, from 4.30–5.30pm so please pop this date and the pageant date in your diary. Our Christmas Pageant will take place on Thursday 7 December and planning is well underway with rehearsals next week, commencing at the start of the day. Boys will need to arrive by 9.00am as we will leave the Centre at 9.15am for rehearsals. Please note that our Saturday Welcome interviews take place on 18 November, with more information to come. Congratulations to our Year 6 soloists; Justin Tan, Myles Burchell, Branden Turner, Benny Li, Tin Tin Zhou and Jack Stretch and our MCs for the evening Terry Ding, Tyler Buckingham and Samuel Smith.

Raffle tickets will be  on sale from Monday 20 March until Tuesday 4 April. Prep – Year 6 will be able to purchase from the playground before school or by  placing tickets in an envelope in the box at reception. Prof Englar-Carlson and I were both interviewed on ABC Radio’s Drive earlier this week about our Positive Masculinity program at BGS.
Jenson Galvin, James Mitchell, James Tan and Matthew Westerman did the school proud as ambassadors at the event and have done a fantastic job mentoring Lunar and Phantom throughout the year. To assist us, we ask parents of our multi-generational BGS boys to complete the ‘BGS Generations form’ so that the School can acknowledge our current second-, third- and fourth-generation BGS boys. At the beginning of the year, staff will host a Parent information evening and discuss ways in which you can be involved in your son’s learning.

His land was surveyed for subdivision in the spring of 1841, defined by the crescent-shaped street layout which remains today, and subdivided allotments were offered for sale. Dendy's town site was initially marketed as Waterville, but he soon renamed his land the Brighton Estate, and the site for his own home 'Brighton Park'. A depression struck, purchasers were few, and Dendy's scheme for emigration and land sales failed. The Were family acquired the land for highly profitable resale after the depression.
We require that students are integrated back into school and sport appropriately which requires conversations with your doctor and medical clearances. We are committed to developing authentic partnerships to connect to this ancient land and its people in unity and  friendship. It is a unique global platform for the promotion of Formula 1 and partners to a youth market. Teams must raise sponsorship and manage budgets to fund research, travel and accommodation.
Physical changes included the construction of the swimming pool at Wilson House, the Clive  Crosby building (now the B-Hive) the Zachariah Wing, Baddiley Building at Wilson House and the Robert Sanderson Centenary Hall. L. Rofe Creative Arts Centre accommodating music, woodwork, art and design was constructed and named in the Headmaster's honour. Reading can be a source of joy, a source of information, a classroom task, or a context for social interaction. As teachers, we present stories and books to expose, develop critical thinking and expand the boys’ knowledge and ideas. On Saturday 12 August, BGS hosted 12 schools across seven fixtures in the VSRU Finals Day.

Haileybury Senior School provides the ideal backdrop for students as they begin their final three years of learning and development. Across four campuses and driven by the VCE Program, students undertake more rigorous academic study, spending more time on topics that align with their particular needs and passions. A strong community ethos and a safe and supportive learning environment. There are also daily unplanned opportunities for parents, staff and boys to guide and support their sons, students or peers, strengthening the three-cornered partnership as we all work together to support the boys. Every day, as teachers, we observe learning moments which need to be shared and celebrated.
It was a pleasure to welcome all boys and families to the commencement of the 2023 school year. The boys have settled well and are excited to be back, staff will establish routines quickly and I am sure all parents are pleased to have their sons back at school. The Junior School Book Fair for our Prep – Year 6 students and families will be held from Wednesday 18 – Friday 20 October.
